For this review I want to talk about the underrated, hidden gem, and most likely a movie that you have never heard about. The only movie that no one talks about even when you have George Clooney, Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey in it. Anyway, this is another R rated movie, for reasons I can’t remember. It doesn’t have a lot of swearing that I can remember nor nudity. But trust me, it is not going to be your typical movie.
First of all, this movie is inspired by a true story, this doesn’t mean much since I don’t think half of what the movie shows is real, I mean, more real than like the experience they had when they were on acid, I’m sure that did happen, but throughout the whole movie. (Minor spoilers) I think you should take most things from this movie with a box of salt (not just a grain), since they are so over the top and ridiculous. So, I do not want to hear anyone say that the USA was paying some hippies to pretend that they had superpowers (although they did) because it wasn’t like this movie at all. Just a quick disclaimer.
Now, to the movie. Is that guy really a journalist? Because he sure acts like a total loser who doesn’t know about writing. (on second thoughts, maybe he got addicted to LSD before he wrote the story and that’s why it was so messed up, that actually makes a lot of sense) Anyway, the movie is about a failed journalist who wants to serve his country and decides to go to Iraq to write about how the situation is there, but he fails at that too. But one day, while he is at a Hotel in Kuwait, he meets a strange man that after talking to him for a few minutes gets invited to enter Iraq with him. Did I mention that that strange man claimed to be a psychic? Well he does, and this leads to the crazy story that they end up living in Iraq. See, I enjoy watching movies based on a true story and I never expect them to be 100% accurate, but at least I expect them to get close to reality, or somewhat accurate, but this movie is just so over the top that I don’t know what I believe about it. I think they took way too many liberties, just like “Paranormal Activity” took liberties from the “true story” which is based on. To the point where the only thing they share is the credits part which mentions the original author. But if you don’t mind watching a movie where you can’t believe anything you see and you will never complain about things like the ones I’m complaining about, I’m sure you could enjoy this movie.
I do not consider this movie to be a great movie, I don’t think it’s bad, it’s kind of “meh”. I enjoyed a few things (not to spoil anything but) like the part where everyone is on acid, or when Kevin Spacey pretends there is a spirit that helps him see behind walls but ends up being a fraud. It has some funny things, ironic comedy I would say, you could enjoy it with friends when you don’t know what else to watch, but you must know that it is very random.
It surely has an amazing cast and surprises me how it went under the radar, but I consider it to be a gem of random comedy. I enjoyed it, I wouldn’t watch it again, but I don’t regret watching it. I don’t think you can learn anything from this movie, but it was never the point, it was never supposed to make you think, and for that I can respect that they made something that they wanted to.
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this review. Tell me what you think of this movie. What was your reaction? I’m planning on reviewing with spoilers some of the movies that I consider to have controversial content or complicated context, what do you think?
